Own An Older Home? Signs You Need A New Electrical System

Posted on

If you own an older home, it's time to inspect the electrical system. An inspection is especially important if the electrical system has never been updated. You might not realize it, but an outdated electrical system can increase the risk of electrical fires. Outdated electrical systems also use more energy. That means you'll spend more money on your electric bills. That's why you need an electrical inspection. Not sure what to look for? Read the list provided below. If you recognize any of the problems listed below, call an electrician right away; you need to have your electrical system upgraded.

Wires Look Damaged

If you haven't looked at the wiring in your home, now's the time to do that. There are a couple of ways to do a visual inspection of the wiring. One way is to take the covers off your outlets. Another way is to climb into the attic space. Both of these methods will let you look at the electrical wiring. If the wiring looks frayed, burnt, or chewed through, call an electrician right away. These are sure signs that your electrical system needs updating.

Circuit Breakers Trip

If you're concerned about the electrical system in your home, keep a journal. You want to document any electrical problems you have in the house. Pay close attention to the circuit breakers. It's not uncommon for circuit breakers to trip from time to time. But, they shouldn't trip on a regular basis. If your circuit breakers trip more often, call an electrician. That's especially important if your circuit breakers trip when you use more than one kitchen appliance. Or, when you use certain electrical outlets.

Crackling Sounds

If you hear crackling or buzzing sounds from inside the walls, contact an electrician immediately. Those crackling and buzzing sounds could be coming from the electrical system. If that's the case, you need to stop using the electricity in your home and call an electrician. Those sounds could mean that your electrical system is overloading and overheating.

Outdated Panel

If you're not sure about the electrical system in your home, have an electrician take a look at the panel. If the electrical panel is outdated, chances are good that the entire system is outdated too. The best way to protect your home and family is to have the electrical system updated in your home. That includes a new electrical panel and wiring.
